Fighting Back
Humans are notoriously known for being stubborn animals. If there is something that people do not like, they will usually take whichever path is necessary to changing it to benefit their own wants or needs. Because of this reason, when a person is put under enough stress by others, such as peers, enemies, or government power, it is only a matter of time before they start to revolt against whatever is hurting them. In the novel Sneak, by Evan Angler, this idea is represented through many aspects of the books. The novel illustrates that if a person has been discriminated against, has support, and even the smallest chance to succeed, they will do whatever is necessary to make a change in their lives. The book follows a group of children who have been run off from their homes by their government and who are currently being hunted down. Throughout their entire lives, these teenagers have had to face hardships simply because they think differently from the majority. While for most of their lives they have sat there and accepted their punishment, they finally snapped. The main protagonist of the novel says to their group too, “never take the easy road just because it isn’t hard”(78). And that is exactly what they do. Because of this, they begin to make a plan to fight against the current government in place. While they had the motivation to go through with it, they still did not know since there were only so many of them. Inspiration goes a long way when it comes to starting a revolution, but by itself, it will usually not amount to much. Along with it, a group supporting their cause is what really jump starts a movement. It does not have to be a large group, but if enough people get together and bounce their ideas off of one another, it can lead to something much greater than the people involved. As stated by their tyrannical government, “To fight for your country, to die for your country [...] there is no greater commitment” (220). These words end up working against the people who said them since this is what helped the people come together in order to fight for what they believed in. Once a group of people has the motive and support for their cause, the only thing they need to throw things into action is hope. Starting a revolution is one thing but being able to keep it growing to where it can actually make a change is something entirely different. Most rebellious acts are stomped out in their early stages due to lack of progress and being overwhelmed. However if there is a sense of hope, no matter how small, a group of people will continue to fight if it is something they truly believe in. Logan and his friends are discouraged and thrown to the ground throughout the entire novel but since they truly believe they can make a difference they continue to press on no matter how dim it looks. The simple quote that is said after they have taken a defeat, “It’s only just begun” (274), helps prove that even though they have been set back, they know they are beginning to make a difference and have a chance to succeed so they continue anyways. Standing up against the majority is a difficult thing to do. For the most part, it seems impossible at the beginning and only seems to get harder as you progress. But if people have the right tools such as a motivation to begin, a group standing behind them supporting their cause, and inspiration to keep pressing forward, then anything is possible no matter the size of the initial group. Change and adaptation is something that the human race has done for its entire existence and will continue to do as long as our species exist. As long as there is even one person who disagrees with a topic, their will always be a reason for it to be changed.
